Let us be honest with each other for a moment.
Week one felt different, didn’t it? New notebooks. Fresh energy. A syllabus that looked completely manageable. You were ready. You were motivated. You had a plan.
And then October arrived.
The assignments got heavier. Life kept moving at its usual relentless pace. And that spark you felt in week one? It is not quite as bright as it used to be. If that sounds familiar, I need you to hear this clearly: you are not failing. You are not losing your drive. You are experiencing something every single student goes through, and it even has a name. It is called the mid-semester dip. And the students who finish strong are not the ones who never feel it. They are the ones who know what to do when it shows up.
So here is what you do. You keep going. Not perfectly. Not with the same fire you had in week one. But consistently, one day and one assignment at a time. You shrink the next step when the whole picture feels overwhelming. You give yourself credit for the ground you have already covered, because you have covered real ground. And you remind yourself that motivation was never meant to carry the whole semester. Purpose is what carries you. And you have that.
Now here is the part I really need you to hear.If you are looking at your grades right now and something is not adding up, reach out. If tests are not going the way you expected, reach out. If you are feeling overwhelmed and you are not quite sure how you are going to make it to the finish line, reach out. Talk to your professor. Contact your academic advisor. Visit your campus tutoring or writing center. Use every resource that is available to you, because those resources exist specifically for this moment.
Here is the thing about most students. They wait. They wait until a situation that was manageable becomes a crisis. They wait until a rough patch becomes a pattern. They wait until they are so far behind that catching up feels impossible.
Do not wait. Asking for help in October when you first notice something is off is one of the smartest and most strategic things you can do for your academic success. It is not a sign that you do not belong here. It is a sign that you are serious about finishing.
So let me say it plainly, with all the love and directness I can put into a newsletter column.
Don’t be normal. Normal students suffer in silence. Normal students wait too long. Normal students let pride get between them and the support that could change everything.
You did not come back to school to be normal. You came back to finish. So finish like you mean it.
Forward and upward. I am rooting for every single one of you.
