July Scholars Corner: The Case for Learning What You Did Not Plan To

Happy July, Scholars!

Summer is in full swing and if you are anything like most students, your brain has been running on a very specific track for the past several months. Your major. Your courses. Your career path. Your playlist. Your For You page. Your feed. And here is the thing about that. All of those things are designed to give you more of what you have already shown interest in. Your social media algorithms, your streaming suggestions, your news feeds, even your study habits, they are all quietly building walls around what you know, what you see, and what you think is possible. And they do it so smoothly that you do not even notice the walls going up.That is not a flaw. It is by design. And it is exactly why it requires intentional effort to grow beyond it.

The Case for Learning Something NewHere is a truth that does not get said enough in higher education: your major is not the ceiling of your mind. It is a starting point. The students who tend to thrive the most in their careers are rarely the ones who only ever knew one thing deeply. They are the ones who brought an unexpected perspective to a familiar problem. The engineer who reads philosophy. The nursing student who takes a photography class. The business major who picks up a second language just because it is interesting. The psychology student who discovers a love for data analysis. These are not distractions from their education. They are the thing that makes their education distinctive. This summer, we want to challenge you to learn something that has absolutely nothing to do with what you are studying. Not because it will look good on a resume. Not because someone told you to. But because the moment you step outside the lane your algorithm has built for you, you start to see connections you never would have seen from inside it. And those connections? That is where innovation lives. That is where creativity breathes. That is where the most interesting version of you begins to take shape.

A Few Ideas to Get You StartedTake a free online course in something completely outside your field. Learn three songs on an instrument you have never played. Read a book in a genre you have never touched. Watch a documentary about an industry you know nothing about. Have a genuine conversation with someone whose career looks nothing like yours.None of these have to be big. They just have to be new.

From Us to YouAt FocusQuest, we believe that student success is not just about finishing the degree. It is about becoming someone who can think across disciplines, adapt to change, and bring something original to every room you walk into. You cannot do that if your world only ever shows you what it already knows about you.

So this July, we dare you to surprise yourself.Happy Summer, Scholars. Go learn something wonderful.

With pride and belief in everything you are becoming,
The FocusQuest Team
