It’s Time for Change

It’s Time for Change

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have played a crucial role in American education, providing opportunities for African American students to receive quality higher education when options were limited. These institutions have produced influential leaders, innovators, and changemakers who have contributed significantly to various fields. However, HBCUs face unique challenges that hinder their growth and impact, with one of the most pressing issues being the ongoing funding challenge.

HBCUs often struggle with financial stability due to a significant funding gap compared to predominantly white institutions (PWIs). This disparity arises from various factors, including historical and systemic inequalities, limited endowments, and reduced access to external funding sources.

How can HBCUs innovatively move forward? It starts with change.

At the core of every HBCU is the richness of its culture and strong sense of community. Students, faculty, and staff are all part of a close-knit, supportive, and welcoming community. One question school administrators must contemplate is, How to incorporate innovative strategies from external vendors without losing the best part of the school- its culture?

If we’re honest, change isn’t easy and can be scary. As a business consultant, I know this too well. Although change is difficult, we must remain relevant and impactful.

Change management provides a structured approach and set of processes to transition individuals, teams, and organizations from a current state to a desired future state. The typical steps in change management include:

  • Define the need for change to identify and clearly articulate the reasons and drivers behind the need for change;
  • Develop a change management strategy that outlines the approach, objectives, and critical activities for managing the change;
  • Formulate a change management team to oversee and drive the initiative;
  • Conduct a change impact assessment on various aspects of the organization, such as processes, systems, roles, responsibilities, and culture;
  • Communicate the plan; and
  • Provide training and support.

Let’s face it. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Transitioning to where you want the organization to be regarding using innovative strategies to acquire and retain students and building robust online and in-person programs will take time. And equally important, you want to ensure that you don’t lose the core of who you are along the way. I get it! If you want to learn how to implement change management in your organization, email info@focusquest.com. We’re here to help!

AI Can Be Biased: Ensuring Equitable AI for All

AI Can Be Biased : Ensuring Equitable AI for All

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to shape a more equitable future for everyone, but there is a significant flaw that deserves our attention. Many AI tools inadvertently perpetuate or even amplify the biases of their mostly white male creators. This leads to the repetition of mistakes and judgments, allowing racism and discrimination to persist in our society. It is crucial that we address these algorithmic biases and work towards creating AI systems that work for everyone.

Examples of Harmful AI Bias
There are sobering examples that highlight the harm caused by biased AI systems. For instance, facial recognition algorithms used worldwide failed to detect Black faces, forcing individuals like Joy Buolamwini to wear a white mask to be recognized by the technology. Similarly, Twitter’s image-cropping tool consistently favored white faces, and AI robots trained on vast image datasets perpetuated stereotypes by identifying women as “homemakers” and people of color as “criminals” or “janitors.”

Real-world Implications
These algorithmic biases have serious implications for people of color. Algorithms are now utilized in determining credit scores, evaluating job candidates, making college admissions decisions, predicting crime rates, influencing court bail and sentencing, and even guiding medical treatments. If these algorithms have learned racism along the way, they will perpetuate it, further exacerbating existing inequalities.

Addressing the Problem
It is important to recognize that Artificial Intelligence itself is not designed to be racist; it learns from the data and patterns it is exposed to. The key lies in the training process. Too often, algorithms are trained on incomplete or biased data, leading to unintentionally racist outcomes. To overcome this, we must diversify both the researchers creating AI systems and the datasets used for training. By including a broader range of perspectives and experiences, we can help AI systems learn better habits and produce more equitable results.

Creating Equitable AI Systems
Joy Buolamwini, after experiencing the biases of AI, founded the Algorithmic Justice League, advocating for diversity among AI coders and the use of inclusive training sets. Seattle tech entrepreneur Luis Salazar launched AI for Social Progress (AI4SP.org) to promote the adoption of diverse training sets that mitigate bias in AI technologies. These initiatives highlight the importance of addressing bias in AI systems and working towards more inclusive and equitable outcomes.

Call to Action
Business leaders and philanthropists have a crucial role to play in supporting efforts to mitigate bias and evaluating the outcomes generated by AI systems for gender and racial bias. AI is reshaping our lives, and if we approach it with a commitment to equity, the future holds remarkable possibilities. It is imperative that we take concrete steps to eliminate systemic bias and racism from AI platforms before it’s too late. Together, let’s work towards making AI the dawn of an exciting new era for everyone, leaving behind the mistakes of the past.

Making the Most of Summer Break

And just like that, the semester is over. Can you believe it? It feels like only yesterday we were opening our laptops and diving into the syllabus. Now it’s time to take a deep breath and reset. We know there are some of you who are going to just keep going through the summer, taking classes and continuing your path to graduation. But for others of you, classes are over until fall. While it’s important to take this time to rest and recoup, let’s not forget to keep our minds active. Between the trips and the fun, take a little time to casually review what you’ve learned throughout the school year. It will help reinforce your knowledge and keep your brain in tip-top shape for the next semester.

Summer break also presents fantastic opportunities for personal and professional development. Consider applying for summer internships in your field of interest. They can provide valuable experience and propel you closer to your goals. Summer is also an ideal time to seek out mentors. Connect with professionals in your industry or alumni who can offer guidance and insights into your chosen career path. The wisdom of mentors can be invaluable as you navigate your academic and professional journey.

Additionally, don’t overlook the possibility of securing scholarships. Look for scholarships tailored to students in your field or at your college level. Every little bit helps when it comes to covering the cost of education, and many students have managed to finance their entire education by just dedicating time to finding scholarships during the summer.

So, take the time to rest and recharge, but don’t drop it all. Ask yourself, what will your September self say to your June self once September arrives?  Will you look back and say, “I’m really glad I did what I did to help get myself ready!” Or will you say, “I wish I had done more to prepare myself.” Dedicate a little time to prepare yourself for the upcoming semester. Trust us, you’ll be thrilled that you did when the new academic year rolls around.

So, from the whole FocusQuest Team…Enjoy your summer break and make the most of it!

Spring Into Renewed Action

It’s April and spring is upon us. For some, we have the opportunity to see nature literally wake up before our eyes. The science of spring has proven to increase our mood, well-being, and energy. Simply taking time to observe the beautiful changes can allow us to be more present, grounded, and connected. Create space- even if just for a moment- to take it all in and breathe; be still from the work of life and breathe.

Let the transforming landscape also serve as a reminder that everything, and everyone, requires a reset, a renewal of sorts. Because sometimes, as days, weeks, and months go by, we panic about all the things we planned at the beginning of the year that we have yet to complete and, in some cases, start. Or, we may be so focused on what we determined at the beginning of the year that we don’t see or consider new opportunities. Whatever our situation, every day we wake up with breath in our lungs, we can and should take advantage of the restart.

So, let’s break it down like this: April is the first month of the year’s second quarter. Technically, that’s a new beginning, right? Make this season of your life about starting fresh. Reflect on how you started the year. Make sure to celebrate the big and small wins [be grateful]; acknowledge any losses and don’t dwell there [honor wholeness and truth]; pivot as necessary [plan + be in the moment]; and keep moving forward [take action, every day].

Grant yourself grace to intentionally reset, recalibrate to center, and truly bloom in this season, fully walking out the life for which you were created. Are you with me?

Springtime! And with spring comes…Spring Break! (Wild applause!) So relax, breathe, have some fun. Take that break. You deserve it! After spring break, you may find it hard to get your head back into the game, and that is normal. But if you just take a moment to remember your goal and your purpose. Remember your “why”. Why are you in school? What is it that you want? Why do you want it? Can you see it? What does life look like once you have it? In other words, what does your success look like to YOU? If you keep those pictures in your head, it will be easier to step back into the academic routine with your head in the game! As usual, we are cheering you on every step of the way.
FocusQuest is focused on you. Our desire is that YOU are also focused on you!

As we still consider this year new, make this time about continuing to grow “you.” Not outcomes (or even incomes)- you. Anything you want starts with you anyway! Consider the Be-Do-Have model: who a person needs to be to accomplish the goal; what a person needs to do to accomplish the goal; what a person will have in accomplishing the goal. Truth be told, most of us function from Have-Do-Be [once I have, I’ll do, then be] or Do-Have-Be [the more I do, the more I’ll have, the better I’ll be] models, oftentimes setting ourselves up to live passively and with reliance on external factors out of our control. But we are not bystanders in and of our lives!

When we start with be-coming the person we need to be, we acknowledge our power. With this model we renew our thinking, our will, and our emotions (be), to walk in the fullness of a blueprint (do) designed with fruitful expectation (have). And as we reciprocally engage our works and our faith, we magnetically influence the world around us to meet our needs. So no matter when, make time and review your plans now to ensure that they start with you living as the best version of yourself for the life you desire and deserve. Because regardless of what you may think, you are the most powerful model for your life. So become the leader that you want to follow- from there is where it all flows. Are you with me?

The 3 Best Note-Taking Apps

The 3 Best Note-Taking Apps

Taking notes used to be so simple. She would take out a sheet of parchment, dip her quill in ink, and begin to write. In 2023, we’re faced with a dizzying array of note-taking tools and apps. How do you choose which one to use? Here are the top 3 note-taking apps you can use back to school:

Notion

Offers a powerful, database-driven note-taking experience that’s unlike most apps out there.

Pros:

  •  Flexible pages. Notion has a template engine that allows you to turn pretty much anything into an easily-duplicated template, including a multi-layered collection of pages. It also has great media embedding and previewing tools, including a gallery view for photos and videos.
  •  Powerful tables. Tables in Notion aren’t just charts; they’re databases. Think of Notion’s databases as Google Docs + Google Sheets. Every row in a table is its own Notion page that you can go into and update.
  •  Nested hierarchical organization. You’re probably tired of this. But Notion does this. You can even turn a set of text into a dropdown so you can roll it up when you want non-immediate information out of the way.
  •  Hybrid editor. Notion lets you write in Markdown or use normal keyboard shortcuts and UI elements to format your text.
  •  Free personal accounts. As long as you don’t mind the 5 MB file upload limit, Notion’s free plan offers everything you need to take notes.

Cons: No offline support. Currently, you need to have an internet connection to use Notion. The team is working to change this, but it’s a big limitation at the moment.

Price: Free

Platforms: Android, iOS, Mac, Windows, Web

Evernote

Evernote is a cross-platform note-taking app that’s great for processing hand-written notes and clipping articles from the web. The price, however, could be prohibitive on a student budget.

Pros

  •  Multiple file formats. If you’re on a paid plan, Evernote can hold anything your professor throws at you: PDFs, PowerPoints, the 3 different sheets of requirements for one project. One fun extra: If you paste a Google Docs link, Evernote creates a Google Drive icon in-line and changes the URL to the name of the doc.
  •  Scanner for mobile. You can use Evernote as a scanner to take photos of pages of books when you don’t want to pay for photocopying. It also has optical character recognition.
  •  Web clipper for browsers. Great for saving those New York Times articles that are hidden behind a paywall so you can use them for your essay later. You can pick how much of the page you want to capture: everything, just the article text, or a highlighted selection of text.

Cons

  •  Limited organization. Imagine your study area’s desk: You have notebooks lying around that contain class notes, random doodles, and frustrated journal entries. You can pile up semi-related notebooks into stacks. You can put sticky notes or flags into pages of the notebook that contain certain topics you want to refer to. That’s the extent of organization with Evernote: stacks, notebooks, notes, and tags.
  •  No Markdown support. If you typically write in Markdown to speed up your writing process, you’ll find its lack of support in Evernote frustrating.
  •  Pricey. If you use Evernote to scan documents and save research papers as I do, the 60 MB included in the free plan won’t cut it. And if you want to use it with more than 2 devices or use optical character recognition, you have to go Premium. At least students get 50% off Premium for a year.

Price: $7.99 / month

Platforms: Android, iOS, Mac, Windows, Web

OneNote

Microsoft’s free cross-platform note-taking app gives Evernote a run for its money, though the interface leaves something to be desired.

Pros

  • Totally. Free. It has everything Evernote can do, but there’s no premium tier. So you get the full feature set out of the box.
  • On basically all the platforms (for free). Just had to emphasize this: With OneNote, you get unlimited devices — a feature that other note-taking apps, like Evernote and Bear, keep behind a premium subscription.
  • Freeform. Unlike Evernote, you can put text boxes everywhere on the screen for OneNote. You can draw. You can even change the background to look like a ruled notebook!

Cons

  • Even less organization than Evernote. It lacks note sorting options, such as sorting notes by newest created or newest modified.
  • Messy interface + Limited tagging capabilities. With OneNote, you have notebooks and dividers within notebooks. Then you can also indent notes within notes. But it’s all over the user interface: notebooks on the left, dividers up top, then notes on the right. I’m a messy note-taker myself, but c’mon.

Price: Included with a Microsoft 365 subscription (starting at $69.99 / year). Check if you have free access through your school or company.

Platforms: Android, iOS, Mac, Windows, Web

There are a lot of note-taking apps out there. And as with most recommendations, you have to figure out what works for you.
I hope that this list will help you decide on your note-taking app, whether it’s on this list or not.
